Carbon dioxide gas is suitable for use against Class B and C fires. Due to its physical properties, carbon dioxide is the only extinguishing gas used in fire extinguishers and suppression systems. In fixed fire suppression systems, carbon dioxide is stored in high-pressure steel cylinders in liquefied form or cooled down to −20°C in large low-pressure containers. When stored as a liquid, much larger amounts of gas can be stored and used efficiently. CO2 fire extinguishers consist of pressurized carbon dioxide gas. When discharged, they extinguish the fire by reducing the amount of oxygen in the environment and interrupting the combustion reaction.

They are suitable for Class B fires (flammable liquids such as petrol, paraffin, paint, thinner...) and Class C fires (flammable gases such as propane, butane, methane...) and do not contain powder or water, thus causing no damage to electronic equipment.

They are effective for use in offices, areas with high electrical risk, and for fires caused by the ignition of liquids such as oils and solvents.
